When a child is unable to remain in their own home due to abuse and neglect, a temporary living arrangement is made called foster care. Foster care is used when temporary custody is granted by the court to Fulton County Children Services. Fulton County’s intent is to place the child with a suitable relative called kinship care to help maintain family bonds. If kinship care is not an option, the caseworker will try to locate a suitable non-relative who has a connection with the family and child. If either of these options aren’t available, the child is placed in a licensed foster care setting. Foster care settings include foster care homes, a residential group home or treatment facility, or an independent living program (only for 16-18 year old).
